This Thanksgiving long weekend, Alberta RCMP will conduct enhanced traffic enforcement initiatives aimed at reducing preventable collisions, injuries, and fatalities on Alberta roads. These efforts are part of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police’s #OperationImpact2026 campaign.
The theme of #OperationImpact2026 is “Safety is in YOUR hands.” Everyone can play a role in road safety by following these tips:
- Don’t drive impaired: Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs impairs judgment and reaction time. Impaired driving is both dangerous and criminal.
- Don’t drive fatigued: Driving while tired reduces your ability to focus and slows reaction time.
- Don’t drive distracted: Texting, calling, or handling devices while driving increases the risk of a collision. Preset your hands-free device, GPS, radio, or music before driving, and only make adjustments when safely parked.
- Buckle up: Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly secured with seat belts or appropriate child safety seats.
- Drive responsibly: Avoid aggressive driving and unnecessary risks. Obey speed limits and follow the rules of the road.
“We are seeing a concerning trend in fatal collisions on Alberta roads,” says Cpl. Mike Warman, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services.
“All road users have a part to play in road safety. By making responsible choices behind the wheel and looking out for one another, we can help prevent tragedies and keep our roads safe this Thanksgiving weekend.”
If you witness any dangerous or impaired driving this holiday weekend, call 911.
