Kal Tire – Sedgewick

At the intersection of Highway 13 and the road into Sedgewick stands more than just a tire store. It is a place built on decades of grit, family, and quiet determination.
For many in the Flagstaff Region, Kal Tire Sedgewick is not simply where you go for tires or repairs. It is where generations have worked, learned, and kept moving.

The story begins in 1948, when Tom Sparrow opened a modest wheel alignment and welding shop in Sedgewick. Known then as Sparrow’s Wheel Alignment, it was the kind of business that small prairie towns rely on. Practical, dependable, and rooted in community.
Tom’s son, Hal Sparrow, grew up in that shop. Like many rural kids, his education extended beyond the classroom. After high school, he entered the automotive trade, beginning his apprenticeship in 1972 and earning his journeyman certification from NAIT in 1975. By then, the foundation had already been laid for what would become a lifelong commitment to the trade and to the community that supported it.
In 1984, following Tom’s passing, Hal and his wife Donna took ownership of the business. It was a pivotal moment. What had started as a small, family-run shop was now in the hands of the next generation, carrying not just a name, but a legacy.
Growth came steadily. By 1988, the business expanded and rebranded as TireTown Sedgewick #56, reflecting an increasing focus on tire services to meet the needs of a changing rural economy.
Oilfield activity in nearby Hardisty and the demands of agricultural operations meant that reliable tire service was no longer optional. It was essential.
Just a few years later, in 1991, another transformation took place. TireTown was acquired by Kal Tire, and Hal and Donna made the decision to follow Kal Tire. With that, TireTown Sedgewick #56 became Kal Tire #256, officially connecting a small-town operation to a growing national brand.
Today, that decision stands as a defining one. Kal Tire has expanded globally, but the Sedgewick location remains its longest-standing franchise store in Canada. It is a point of pride not just for the Sparrows, but for the entire region.
The current facility, completed in 1998 and opened in 1999, marked a new era. Purpose-built and highly visible, it reflected a vision that was ahead of its time. Hal wanted something more than a typical rural shop. He wanted a space that felt modern, welcoming, and professional.
“Why can’t we have something that looks like Edmonton in small-town Alberta?” he has said.

That philosophy still defines the business today. Walk inside, and you will not find the clutter or atmosphere many associate with automotive shops. Instead, there is intention in every detail, from the clean showroom to the customer experience at the counter. It is a reflection of a belief that rural communities deserve the same quality and care as anywhere else.
But what truly sets Kal Tire Sedgewick apart is not the building, it is the team inside it.
From its earliest days, the business has been built on apprenticeship and mentorship. What began with one employee has grown into a team of more than a dozen, many of whom started as high school students sweeping floors. Over the years, more than 35 apprentices have come through the shop, learning not just technical skills, but the value of work, consistency, and pride in doing a job right.
That commitment is intentional. In a region where retaining young people can be a challenge, creating local opportunities matters.
“It’s the future that keeps us going,” Hal has said of the apprenticeship program.
Today, the business continues to evolve under the leadership of the next generation. Hal’s son, Bryce Sparrow, quite literally grew up in the shop. Starting at just 13 years old, he followed the same path, from sweeping floors to becoming a licensed automotive and heavy-duty technician, and now stepping into a leadership role within the company.
It is a transition that carries both pride and responsibility.
“I’ve got big boots to fill,” Bryce has said, acknowledging the weight of a third-generation business.

And yet, the values remain the same.
Hard work. Honesty. Community.
Kal Tire Sedgewick has expanded its services far beyond tires.
Today, it operates across four key areas: tire services, full automotive repair, heavy-duty truck and trailer work, and a comprehensive parts department. It is a one-stop facility designed to meet the diverse needs of the region, from farmers and oilfield operators to everyday drivers.
That breadth of service is not just about growth. It is about necessity.
In a rural area, access matters. When equipment breaks down during seeding or harvest, time is everything. Having a trusted, local business that can respond quickly is not just convenient. It is critical.
The Sparrows understand that responsibility.
“The Flagstaff Region is everything to us,” Hal has said. “Without the people here, we wouldn’t be here.”

That connection extends beyond the shop doors. Over the years, Kal Tire Sedgewick has quietly supported community initiatives, local events, and youth programs. Their approach is thoughtful and focused, often prioritizing support for children and families, reinforcing the idea that strong communities are built by investing in the next generation.
Nearly eight decades after Tom Sparrow first opened his shop, the legacy continues. What started as a small operation has become a cornerstone of the Flagstaff Region, not through rapid expansion or fleeting success, but through consistency, resilience, and a deep-rooted commitment to community.
And perhaps, if Tom is indeed watching, as the family likes to say, he would see something familiar.
A store that still values hard work.
A family that still shows up every day.
And a business that, above all else, keeps the region moving forward.
