Study: Readers aren’t abandoning the newspaper, they’re embracing e-editions

As newspaper readers continue to shift towards digital platforms, studies show e-editions are emerging as the popular option for readers – more so than news websites.

E-editions provide readers with the option of accessing the complete newspaper any time, anywhere and on any device.

Since e-editions replicate the print edition’s layout and format (including ads), print readers can migrate their reading habits to the digital realm. This is particularly appealing to younger digital native readers.

Research from 2025 confirms that almost four in ten newspaper readers (37%) are choosing e-editions for their online reading (as compared to reading posted content on news websites).

And when readers were asked how they accessed the e-edition they read/looked into in the past week, the overwhelming majority (51%) reported accessing e-editions directly through a newspaper’s website. About a third said they accessed e-editions by either subscribing to the print newspaper or the e-edition specifically.

No matter how you look at it, e-editions offer convenient digital access to news, with benefits for both readers and publishers.

Research was managed by Totum Research on behalf of News Media Canada.  Online interviews with 2,418 respondents were conducted in December 2024/January 2025 across all provinces, in English and French.
