Ontario Premier Doug Ford shouts out newspapers during National Newspaper Week

News Media Canada (NMC) – Each year, National Newspaper Week offers a chance for Canadians across the country to show their respect for the journalism that touches their communities. This year The Manitoulin Expositor got a special shout-out from Ontario Premier Doug Ford during the week-long event.

Gifted a copy of the October 8 edition of the newspaper, Ford shared his sentiments on the importance of local journalism, praising the news source as a “great little paper.”

His appreciation for local news was further met with enthusiasm as he flipped through the content, saying, “That’s what I love about these community newspapers, they have everything in it. You can look through it, you get to know what’s going on, everything from real estate costs to everything. It is still affordable real estate.”

The premier was on-site at the Manitoulin swing bridge on Manitoulin Island to make announcements, including one involving the 110-year-old bridge, which is part of the province’s $30 million plan to rebuild and revamp infrastructure and transportation. The premier also announced a new 68-bed nursing home in Wiikwemkoong First Nation.

This year, National Newspaper Week ran from October 5 to October 11. ‘Protect the Truth’ was the theme for the 85th annual event.
