Daysland Legion rewards Remembrance Day essay and poster winners at Daysland School

Gord Pennycook and Jim Gillespie from the Daysland Branch #82 of the Royal Canadian Legion dropped by Daysland School on Thursday, March 14, to award the winning students for the Legion Poster and Literary Contest from last November.

This year, students received certificates and an envelope of cash for their winning entries. Pennycook told students and staff at the school that Daysland entrants didn’t just win the local branch contest, but that eight students went on to compete at the Legion District level, where Daysland took eight of the 41 wins there.

Pennycook says he’s very happy with the quality of the entries from Daysland, and he’d love to see more participation from students in all categories. He says he likes to drop in at the start of the contest and would like to address students about the importance of Remembrance Day activities like these.

The winners for Senior Essays were Emma Downie, first, Kera Schlaut, second, with honourable mention to Elise Mohler. Emma went on to win honourable mention at districts, while Kiera came in second there. In the Intermediate Essays, the winners were Pearl Downie, first, Alana Pfeffer, second, and Jasmine Zacharias with honourable mention. Pearl went on to finish first at Districts, too. For the Junior Essays, Emma Bendfeld came in first, with Abigail Kruchten in second place, and Parker Scobey winning honourable mention.
