RCMP deal with a number of frauds, thefts, and stolen property

Killam RCMP Detachment members were busy during the period May 17 to June 7.

Members attended five of eight 911 hangups.

The detachment received five complaints of abandoned vehicles, none were criminal in nature.

RCMP dealt with seven animal complaints, four involving injured deer or moose from collisions with motor vehicles, the rest were cattle complaints.

Police had three complaints of assault. One arose during the May long weekend involving youth. Charges have been laid. Alcohol was determined to be a factor.

A second complaint was determined to be unfounded.

The third complaint is part of an ongoing investigation by RCMP, and has been reassigned to the Camrose detachment.

Members assisted two provincial agencies, first by monitoring a young offender under 24 hour house arrest. A warrant out of Lethbridge was also executed by members.

RCMP were called to assist the public in two instances, one to provide mediation during a landlord and tenant, another to mediate the division of property between ex-roommates.

Members responded to three complaints of break and enter. One, on a rural property where tools and miscellaneous items were taken, had evidence left on scene that is currently being analyzed by the forensic unit.

A second complaint, at a business, was determined to be unfounded.

The third complaint occurred at an inn in Hardisty, and is part of an ongoing investigation, with suspects known to police.

Police responded to another break and enter complaint at a rural private property and determined there was forced entry, but nothing of value was taken.

RCMP were called to assist in a sudden death case, determined to be natural causes.

Members attended a cause disturbance complaint in Killam, the suspect was gone when they arrived, and it was determined that no criminal act had taken place.

A proactive traffic stop by a member resulted in the driver being charged with driving while disqualified, a criminal code charge. The driver was also wanted on an outstanding warrant. The driver had multiple similar charges, resulting in the vehicle being impounded for 60 days. The driver was released for an Aug. 7 court date.

Police had 14 false alarms during this period, with members attending in six of the 14.

Members were called to the scene of a rural property near Hardisty to assist, as well as a grass fire near Sedgewick.

Police had five complaints of fraud. The first involved the unauthorized transfer of a substantial funds between accounts, but no money was taken.

The second complaint was determined to be unfounded.
Another unauthorized transfer of funds is being investigated by the bank in question.

A person selling an item through Kijiji received a $3,000 cheque for a $500 item. Luckily, the person did not cash the cheque, and alerted police instead.
