Forestburg Flyers eliminated from playoffs; Hughenden meets Hanna in finals

Fo-Flyers-8-Mar-18-14 In front of a packed house on Friday, March 14, the Forestburg Flyers made their last stand against the Hanna Phantoms in the best of three East Central Senior Hockey League Semi-final playoffs.

The Flyers gave it a great effort, with Joel Bevington scoring two on the night, along with Brett Frizzel and Michael Buchholz.

Flyers Goaltender Jeremy Klapak was standing on his head for most of the night, repelling shot after shot, and it looked good for the team when a quarter way into the third period the score was 4-1 for the Flyers.

With just over eight minutes left in the game, however, the Phantoms poured it on, determined not to take the series to game four, and scored two goals less than a minute apart, then tied the game with just a minute, 54 seconds left in the third.

The Phantoms scored 36 seconds into the overtime period, taking the game and the series.

The Flyers played a great first season, bringing senior hockey back to Forestburg, and their fans are already looking ahead to next season.

Friday’s 50/50 was over $1,100.

Hughenden swept their series against the Provost Combines, winning Friday’s home game 4-3, to advance to the finals against Hanna.

Hughenden will face Hanna at home on Friday, March 21.
