Daysland Northstars begin mid-season climb with 3-game winning streak
The Daysland Northstars played three games last week and started a new winning streak.
With only two previous wins on the season, the Northstars crawled out of the basement in the BRHL to secure third place overall.
The streak started on Wednesday when the Wainwright Rustlers came to Daysland.
The Rustlers had nine skaters and goaltender Adam Bartko, who was on fire.
The Northstars pebbled the visitors’ net with 58 shots.
In net for the Northstars was Andrew Sinclair, who played his first game of the year as work and off ice commitments have kept him away. Sinclair faced 16 shots.
The game was fast with very few infractions called. All the shots and great saves made for an entertaining game for the fans.
Daysland opened the scoring on a goal by Brad Trautman, from Shayne Andres and Dean Petiot.
They then took a two-goal lead on a Petiot goal from Gregory Doll and Graham Zimmer.
Daysland’s Trautman scored his second of the period on a feed from Colin Zimmer and Andres. It was a 3-0 game after the first.
Northstar Jared Williams scored short-handed, from Dean Petiot in the second.
The Northstars added a fifth goal by Dayne Sorensen, from Colby Nichol and Devan Herder, to take the commanding lead over the Rustlers.
The Rustlers scored the only goal of the third to make the final 5-1.
The Hardisty Stampeders travelled to Daysland on Friday, Dec. 11.
The Stampeders came with a short bench with only 10 skaters.
The Northstars capitalized 2-5 on the power-play while shutting out Hardisty 0-11 with the extra attacker.
The Northstars scored a pair of goals in each period, while the Stampeders scored one late in the third period for a 6-1 final.
Picking up goals for Daysland were: Shayne Andres, Jared Crooks, Colin Zimmer, Brad Trautman, Gregory Doll, and Dayne Sorensen.
Scoring for the Stampeders was Kyle Maas.
The Northstars capped off their week by winning 9-4 on Saturday, Dec. 14 over the Mohawks in Macklin.
In other BRHL news, the league-leading Tofield Satellites were handed their first two losses of the season by the Big Valley Oil Kings on the weekend in Big Valley.
The Oil Kings took game one on Saturday 4-1 and Sunday’s match-up 8-6.
The Northstars travel to Tofield on Wednesday, Dec. 18 in hope of keeping the streak alive. They will host Wainwright on Friday, Dec. 20 in the last home game before the holidays.
The Hardisty Stampeders will have the last home game before the new year on Saturday, Dec. 21 when the Wainwright Rustlers come to town.
