Blaise Young, owner of both the Killam and Forestburg Bottle Depots, had some very important visitors on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the Killam Bottle Depot to help him celebrate the $10,000 mark for donations to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

The Killam ECS class was visiting, for a tour of the recycling centre, when one of the students, Hayden Hogman, got the chance to make the final donation. The class made a draw for the privilege before coming down to the depot.

Young says patrons of both recycling centres have been incredibly generous since he started collecting in 2011, with many donations both of cans and cash.

He says with the Killam Bottle Depot servicing Killam and Sedgewick, the total there was a little higher than Forestburg, whose own $4,511 to-date total is not insubstantial.

“Just about every family has a ‘Stollery story’ about their children, a relative, or a friend,” says Young.

He says his goal is to raise $20,000 between the two depots.

The Alberta Bottle Depot Association started the Stollery project in 2009, with a goal of $100,000 in donations.

The response was so overwhelming, they reached their goal, and added the Sothern Alberta Children’s Hospital (SACH). To date, donations are close to half a million in total, with $247,985.18 raised for the Stollery, and $240,890.37 for SACH.
