Special display at Killam’s Fire Dept. Pancake Breakfast *Web Exclusive*

During the Killam Fire Department’s Pancake Breakfast on Oct. 14, Don Rosland, Fire Rescue Officer from the Office of the Fire Commissioner, brought the new Public Education Van, with its displays, to the fire hall.

Recently outfitted and put on the road at the beginning of the summer, the van has a number of cool features, including a new Sparky’s Hazard house, which Rosland demonstrated. The hazard house showns a number of common household fire hazards in a dynamic way, with both smoke and sound effects throughout the house.

Rosland said he was very impressed with the children who he showed the house to over the morning in Killam, saying that they were quite well educated on what to do in case of fire.

Another display Rosland brought out of the van caught the attention of a lot of adults and children alike, as a bright orange (fake) flame rises out of a saucepan on the stove, perilously close to a roll of paper towel, and a bottle of cooking oil perched above the stove top.

The Killam department saw 155 people over the course of the morning, serving eggs, pancakes, french toast, and sausages cooked by the firefighters.

There were some Sparky sightings as well.  Sparky will return to Killam, this time at the Killam Public School, on Thursday, Oct. 18, along with Rosland and the van, when the Fire Department sponsors a visit by Mary Lambert for her show, “Sing out Fire Safety.”

Both Killam and Lougheed school students will be attending that day.
