BRHL’s Sedgewick Sabres undefeated in the season

Sedgewick Sabre Brent Ottmann had five points in Friday's game against Big Valley in the BRHL

The Sedgewick Sabres hosted the Big Valley Oil Kings on Friday, Nov. 4.

A nice sized crowd was on hand to watch this close match on the ice.

The Oil Kings opened the scoring in the first period. The score stayed that way until early in the second when they added one more to move up 2 – 0 for the visitors.

Midway through the second, the Sabres found the net with Ben Starbuck getting his first and second goals within five minutes.

Scott Effert added one to make the score one up for the home team as they headed into the dressing room after two.

The Oil Kings tied the score early in the third. A minute later, Starbuck added his third of the night for the hat-trick.

Just under midway through the third, Big Valley tied the score up at four.

With under four minutes left in regulation time, Brent Ottmann scored from Starbuck short-handed giving the home team the lead, which held despite Big Valley pulling the goalie for the extra attacker.

The Sabres hosted the Tofield Satellites on Saturday night. The Sabres scored three after one period of play.

The second saw the Sabres net two more to the Satellites’ one goal to put the home team up by four after the second.

In the third period, the Satellites came on strong scoring four goals to the Sabres’ one to make the final six to five for the hometown team in a great match up for the fans.

The Sabres have 11 home jerseys up for grabs to minor hockey players.

A name is drawn and a young player gets to go to the game and skate the warm up and stand on the blue line for the singing of the national anthem.

After the game, the player gets to go in the dressing room with the “big” hockey players and get their jersey signed.

On Friday, Owen Djos of the eight and under Novice Sharks was the lucky honourary Sabre. When asked who he was most excited to get to sign his jersey, he said, “Coach Tuftin will be the first one!”

Saturday night’s game saw Cole Bulle of the 10 and under Atom Sharks get to be the lucky honourary Sabre.

The Sabres next home game is Saturday, Nov. 26 where they once again host the Big Valley Oil Kings.

Get there early to cheer for the young Sabre in his pre-game skate!
