Lougheed holding third Nomination Day since March

Village of Lougheed is holding another Nomination Day, the third since the resignation of councillor Terry Phoenix.

After the first two Nomination Days passed without any applicants, village CAO Colleen Mayne said that she then referred the matter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs, as outlined in the Local Elections Act.

She said that office recommended that a third Nomination Day be held after the summer ended.

“There has been some interest,” Mayne says.

If the vacant Council seat is not filled, she says, it is the Minister’s perrogative to reduce the total number of seats on Council from five to four, but says that can’t happen until the next general election.

Mayne says Council is getting work done, despite the vacancy.

She says they just approved a $250,000 project for upgrades and repairs to the water treatment plant.

Mayne, who is currently the village’s only employee, has been given a conditional Water Operator’s licence, and is planning on writing her exams for certification within the next few months, she says.
