Meet the Federal Candidates: Kevin Sorenson, Conservative MP

kevin-sorensonConservative Party of Canada candidate, and incumbent of the old Crowfoot electoral district, Kevin Sorenson is a businessman and farmer from Killam.

Constituency boundaries have changed since he was first elected in Crowfoot in 2000, more than once.

Sorenson was elected in 2000 as the Canadian Alliance Candidate, then in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2011, has been the Conservative MP for Crowfoot for nearly 15 years.

In 2004 and 2006, Sorenson had the largest margin of victory in any federal riding, at 80.2 per cent and 82.5 per cent respectively.

Meet the Federal Candidates: Katherine Swampy, NDP

katherine-swampyThe Battle River-Crowfoot NDP executive has confirmed Katherine Swampy as the NDP candidate for this district.

Swampy, a resident of Maskwacis, is just shy of 30 years-old.

She has three diplomas: (First Nations Management, University Studies, and Fashion Design) as well as a BA in Economics with a Political Studies minor from the U of A, Augustana Faculty.

Swampy is a wife, and mother of five, and has full-time federal civil servant job.

Meet the Federal Candidates: Andy Kowalski, Liberal Party

Andy-KowalskiLiberal Party candidate and local businessman Andy Kowalski, 52, calls Ryley his home, but he wasn’t born in this country. In 1971, he left the communist dictatorship in Poland, along with his mother and brother, and came to Edmonton under the sponsorship of his grandfather.

Times were tough for the family, with Kowalski remembering the six years spent in the Boyle Street neighbourhood trying to eke out an existence. “We were so poor,” he said, “but we worked ourselves out of poverty.”

His mother worked in a hotel for 35 cents an hour, and washed clothes until she met the owner of Ryley Sausage. She married him and moved out to Ryley in the early 1980s.

Meet the Federal Candidates: Gary Kelly, Green Party

Gary-KellyGary Kelly is the Green Party of Canada candidate for Battle River Crowfoot. Kelly was born in Scotland; his parents made the brave decision to immigrate to Canada.

He has lived in many places all over Alberta and BC while growing up and starting his own family.

He currently resides in Tofield with his wife, Sharri, and three children, Conner, Graeme, and Teagan.

He has a diploma in Biological Sciences from NAIT and a certificate in Conservation Enforcement from Lethbridge College.
