Ramadan offers non-Muslim Albertans the perfect excuse to learn more about their neighbours who practise the faith, a UCP member suggested in the legislature yesterday.

Jackie Lovely, the member for Camrose, said: “Muslim Albertans play an essential role in building our communities, contributing to our economy, and enriching the cultural fabric of Alberta. Their values of generosity, service and community involvement are deeply aligned with the spirit of Ramadan.”

During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims around the world fast from dawn to sunset in a time of reflection and spiritual renewal, featuring an emphasis on devotion, communal prayer, mindfulness and self-discipline. Ramadan wraps up with a final breaking of the fast at the final sunset of Ramadan, which this year in Alberta falls on March 30 and begins a celebration called Eid al-Fitr.

“These moments of unity bring people closer, fostering a sense of gratitude and compassion,” said Lovely.

“It is a period that reminds (us) to extend kindness to those in need, support the less fortunate, and care for neighbours, the elderly and those facing hardship.”

She continued: “The act of fasting is not just a physical practice but also a spiritual exercise (related to) patience and humility, and gratitude for blessings in life.”

Nearly five per cent of the Canadian population is made up of Muslims. Worldwide, Islam is the second most widely practised religion, behind Christianity.
