Battle River Baseball Playoffs start
The Battle River Baseball League wrapped up the 2014 regular season with the final games on Thursday, July 3, and on Sunday, July 6. The BRBL playoffs will start this week with games every Tuesday and Thursday until a winner is crowned.
The Lakers of Spring Lake travelled to Lougheed on Wednesday, July 3 and beat the Wildcats 13-2. The Lakers, sporting their brand new uniforms with white pants and black tops, travelled to Rosalind on a beautiful Sunday night to take on the Rosalind A’s.
The game was rescheduled from the All Star Game night, but proved to still have a lot on the line for both teams. If Spring Lake won, they would capture the Battle River League pennant as the top team in the regular season, the A’s were trying to earn home field advantage for the playoffs.
On the mound for Spring Lake was Lance Zimmer, who pitched the entire game and came out with a 10-3 win. Rosalind sent youngster Matt Palmer to the mound in his third appearance of the season for the A’s.
Errors took a beating on Palmer’s pitching line, as possibly only one of his six runs was earned.
Matt Enright came in to put a stop to the roll the Spring Lake hitters appeared to be on, finishing off the final four innings of the game.
The Lakers clinched the top spot with a record of 8-2-0 for a total of 16 points. The A’s and the Astros played on Thurs-day to a 3-3 tie. Amisk finishes the season in sixth place with a total five points. The A’s earn fifth with a record of 4-3-3 for 11 points total.
The Coronation Cardinals travelled to Heisler where the hometown Cardinals won 10-7 in a game filled with hits, runs, and plenty of first-inning errors. On the mound for Heisler was Todd Steil, and Nolan Miller picking up the win. Cody Wolbeck was four-for-four at bat on the night. Both Cardinal teams end the season with 15 points, Coronation wins the tie with one more win than Heisler.
The Killam Braves travelled to Castor, where they lost 8-6 to the Raiders. The Braves made up a postponed game with Amisk on Sunday in Czar and won 6-4 over the Astros. Killam finishes the season fourth with a record of 6-4-0 for a total of 12 points.
Lougheed finishes the season with a 2-8-0 record for seventh place, and Castor comes in eighth place with a 1-9-0 record.
The playoffs will match-up as follows: Spring Lake Vs Castor, Coronation Vs Lougheed, Heisler Vs Amisk, Killam Vs Rosalind.
The top four teams have home field advantage for game one of the best-of-three series. Games start at 7 p.m.
