Lacrosse initiative gains Flagstaff County Council support and funding

Efforts are underway to build a Flagstaff County Lacrosse association.

Edmonton Rush players attended drop-in sessions in Lougheed and Forestburg, and Rush players also attended area schools this week, with registrations still open to play.

During their Feb. 26 regular Council meeting, Flagstaff County councillors heard a proposal from Recreation Coordinator Jim Fedyk, who relayed a request for funding for the new project.

Formerly, Flagstaff residents who wanted to play Lacrosse had to travel to Wainwright or Stettler to play, Fedyk told Council, but as of that date, 48 youth had already registered for Flagstaff teams.

“It looks like we could have five teams by the official registration nights,” he said.

Fedyk said that by funding the jerseys all through the county, “We are trying to establish a regional identity for a truly regional team.”

He said the County will have the opportunity to name the teams and control of the logo design, too, as part of the regional team development.

Fedyk told council that due to the difficulties in starting the teams, the first year Flagstaff will be an offshoot of the Wainwright team.

He said plans are to move to the Central league in the second year, to benefit Forestburg players.

“I am trying to think of ways to fill the arena year-round,” Fedyk told councillors, “and this is one small step in getting something in there when the ice is out.”
