A former physician in Wetaskiwin has donated $150,000 to NorQuest College’s Wetaskiwin branch.

The college said in a media release that that amount was donated by Dr. Tuhin Bakshi, and his wife Rita Bakshi, for a practical nursing program in the city.

Dr. Tuhin said in the release that he was hoping the donation would encourage NorQuest graduates to consider a fulfilling career in a rural centre.

“We both value education and we both love to learn,” said Dr. Tuhin Bakshi.

“Education leads to careers and careers lead to successful futures, that’s why we picked this program and this community,” Bakshi added.

Bakshi says that his family also supports NorQuest’s efforts to bring education opportunities closer to Indigenous communities.

They are hopeful their donation will also help reduce some barriers for Indigenous students looking for a healthcare career.
