Palace Theatre feature movie “Brotherhood” an interactive event with visit from writer/director
When the DaysArts group started running regular movies at the Palace Theatre in Daysland, they also started what’s known as the Reel Alternative.
Each month, they bring in one special movie under this program, designed to be a little off the beaten path. It’s often a documentary, or a film festival-type selection designed to provoke a little more thought than the average box-office selection.
This month’s selection, called “Brotherhood,” is scheduled for Monday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 22. Brotherhood won the Canadian Screen Award, and its debut at the Palace Theatre this month will also feature a visit from Vancouver-based writer and director Richard Bell.
The film is based on a true story, when a group of teenage boys attending camp in 1926 end up fighting for their lives during a freak storm that capsizes their canoe.
“It is up to the two adult leaders – one incapacitated by the Great War and the other haunted by the loss of his son to the Spanish Flu – to try and save the boys,” says the Director.
Bell will be available after the film for a question and answer period, and to discuss the movie and actual events.
“We are delighted with the opportunity of having the director of this important Canadian movie with us in our theatre, making this an even more enjoyable experience for our rural audience,” says Sharon Eshpeter of DaysArts.
