Camrose Police charge male with attempted murder of common-law partner
At approximately 5:45 P.M. on October 17, 2024, the Camrose Police Service received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots in the area of 42 Street and 52 Avenue. Officers were dispatched immediately to the scene, where they began canvassing the neighbourhood. While conducting checks with local residents, shots were fired in the direction of the officers.
In response to the active threat, officers ensured nearby residents were safely secured in their homes or temporarily evacuated from the area. Members of the Camrose Police Service promptly established containment around the suspect’s residence and maintained control of the situation until specialized support arrived from the R.C.M.P. Emergency Response Team and the Edmonton Police Service Tactical Unit.
The standoff lasted approximately 18 hours, during which time the suspect discharged multiple rounds into the street and alleyway. The situation was resolved peacefully when the suspect surrendered to police without further incident.
The individual in custody has been identified as 52 year old Shannon Murray Ellis. An investigation revealed that the incident was preceded by an argument between Ellis and his common-law partner. Before police arrived, Ellis fired several shots towards his partner and into her vehicle, prompting her to flee the scene.
Ellis has been charged with multiple serious offenses, including:
- Attempted Murder
- Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm with Intent to Injure
- Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to the Public
- Careless Use of a Firearm
- Assault with a Weapon
- Possession of a Weapon While Prohibited
Further charges may be laid as the investigation continues. Ellis is currently in custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Provincial Court on October 23, 2024.
The Camrose Police Service wishes to thank local residents for their cooperation and patience throughout the incident. We also extend our gratitude to the RCMP and the Edmonton Police Service for their critical assistance during the standoff.
