Airdrie RCMP Officer charged with assault with a weapon

On April 3, the Calgary Police Service arrested an RCMP officer after an investigation into a report of an assault which occurred in Calgary on Saturday, March 9, 2024. It’s alleged that a man was assaulted outside of a northwest Calgary apartment building by the off-duty officer. The victim was struck after falling to the ground, but did not suffer any injuries.

Constable Maxime Bedard (37) was charged with one count each of assault with a weapon and uttering threats. He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice on Tuesday, May 14 in Calgary.

Constable Bedard has 7 years of service with the RCMP. He has been suspended with pay. Once the criminal matter has been resolved, his duty status will be reviewed.

The Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and it’s important that the actions of all those involved, including the police, are assessed fairly and transparently. This is why, when we become aware of a situation that requires review, we immediately initiate internal review processes, separate from the legal process. The internal review includes the actions of the RCMP, the use of force during the incident, and the duty status of the member. As this matter is now before the courts, the Alberta RCMP are unable to provide further information.
