After 40 years at Losness, including 30 as owner, Denise Bratland retired at the end of last month, making way for the chosen successor – the James Insurance Group, which took over the location at the start of this month.
“We’re really excited to be starting to offer our services in Lougheed,” says Marcy Lazarick, a partner with the James Insurance Group.
“We offer a full suite of ATB services, so we can help you with any of your financial needs, from day-to-day banking to mortgages and investments.
“We also plan to offer some insurance services in Lougheed as well, a couple of days a week.
“We’re really excited that we’re able to bring our brand to Lougheed.”
Lougheed becomes the newest location for the James Insurance Group, which already provides insurance and financial services, in addition to Alberta registries, in Killam, Sedgewick, and Hardisty.
The James Insurance Group is a third-generation business that’s been offering services in Flagstaff County since 1956. Sixty-seven years later, the business is stronger than ever.
“And we’re really proud of that fact,” Lazarick adds.
“So, if you are one of the ATB clients that usually does your banking in Lougheed, we’re really excited to be able to meet you and have a conversation and see how we can help you with your financial needs.”
Losness Insurance Agencies has operated as an insurance brokerage and ATB financial agent since 1963 under the Losness name, Bratland explains.
“Many other services were offered when my parents had ownership, generally, anything business-wise that my dad could help with,” Bratland recalls, likening her father to the business version of a Jack-of-all-trades.
Bratland, born and raised in Flagstaff, started working for her parents circa 1983.
Ten years later, she took over the family business – and never looked back.
“I would say that our business is unique for our relationship with our customers, knowing them as fellow community supporters in the small but vibrant area of the county and province,” notes Bratland, who served as a general insurance broker until 2021.
In 2021, Losness’s insurance business was sold to Westland Insurance at the Daysland office.
Over the years, Bratland has taken pride in supporting other local businesses. That includes The Community Press.
Bratland has promoted her business through ongoing ads in The ‘Press.
“We also have annual radio ads,” she notes. “I have also supported various publications over the years with ads purchased primarily to support the causes that they represent.”
Bratland, who retired on March 31, says she owes her customers a debt of gratitude for supporting her all these years.
She looks back on her career with fondness and calls it a success.
“To me, success is the ability to make a living, raise a family, and provide them with the tools to achieve their dreams – as well as my own,” she says.
“I do feel successful and hope that the business will continue to be that going forward for the new operators.”
