Ball Family Dental

4913 50 Street, Killam

Long before she graduated from dental school at the University of Alberta in 2016, Leanne Ball knew she wanted to open her own practice in Killam.

“I started scoping out all of the different practices in the area and I thought, ‘Well, Sedgewick has a dental clinic, Daysland has a dental clinic, why doesn’t Killam have a dental office? It’s such a nice town,’” Ball recalls.

“You just walk down Main Street, it’s so beautifully manicured.”

Killam is also home to what Leanne refers to as her “favourite clothing store” – Twice Nice.

“I had volunteered there a few times and I loved it,” she adds.

After she married her high school sweetheart, Jeff Ball, it became their joint mission to one day open a dental clinic in Killam.

The plan, which took shape over several years, was to open it in the lot next to Twice Nice.

“And of course, life had other plans,” Leanne says.

At one point, they considered opening along the service road near Subway.

“We could have done that, but it would’ve taken a little bit too long,” she notes. “And so then we found that Tanya (Piche) was willing to sell her hair salon (the building that housed Underground Hair Company), and four or five months after we had purchased the building, we had a functional dental office.”

Leanne recalls that she and Jeff sketched their proposed design on a piece of paper one Sunday afternoon. Their concept was soon in the hands of Grayline Design and then GH Construction brought it to life.

Located on Main Street Killam across from Guardian Drugs, Ball Family Dental officially began serving patients on June 28, 2021.

Over the past year, the dental clinic has been offering a wide variety of general dental services, including checkups, cleanings, fillings, root canals, same-day crowns, and composite veneers. They also offer surgical extractions, including wisdom teeth.

Among the orthodontics offerings at Ball Family Dental is Invisalign, as well as HealthyStart, a system that uses a series of tooth guards to straighten kids’ teeth without braces while also improving airway health.

“So if kids snore, if they have breathing issues, it helps to correct those things at an early age,” Leanne explains, which is very rewarding for me having two little boys at home and being able to see the progress that they make as well.”

In addition, the clinic has also started offering Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) for therapeutic and cosmetic use.

“The next thing that we’re tackling is dental implants,” Leanne reveals. “We don’t offer them yet, but we’re on our way towards making that a reality and offering that as well at Ball Family Dental.”

Ball Family Dental’s mission contains three main pillars.

First, they want to elevate the way people experience dentistry.

“We want people to have a unique experience when they come here,” Leanne says. “We don’t want it to be something where they’re a number, they’re just herded in and out.

“We want people to feel valued and like their opinion matters, and they have a voice in what kind of work they want done. And we want to cater to each individual’s philosophy when it comes to their health. We want them to have autonomy over their treatment plan, over their dental work.”

Second, they want to enrich the lives of those who work in dentistry.

“We want our team members to have an excellent job,” Leanne says. “We want to provide jobs in the community and people that have training in dental… maybe they’re like me and they were driving over an hour to go to work.

“We want to create those jobs in our community and have it be a fantastic place to work, where people can enhance themselves and develop their skills and grow if they want to. If they want to continue throughout their career path and keep going and get more education, then that’s something they can do here.”

Third, they want to enhance their community.

“We want to be a community pillar and we want to be a business that can be supportive of everything in the community, including local events and charities,” Leanne concludes.
