Take the family out during Alberta’s Free Fishing Weekend

This coming weekend, July 3 and 4, is Family Fishing Weekend in Alberta.

For these two days, no fishing licence is required to go fishing in Alberta.

It’s all part of National Fishing Week, which takes place from July 3 to 11.

To help celebrate, participants can order a free book called ‘Catch Fishing.’ It’s full of fishing tips and tricks, and perfect for anyone who is new to fishing and not quite sure how to get started!

To get your free copy, you can email ‘info@catchfishing.com’ with the subject heading “booklet” to get your free copy. Make sure to include your name and full mailing address.

The Battle River Watershed Alliance (BRWA) is also promoting this Alberta-wide weekend event within its region.

“Fishing is a great activity to get outside and explore your watershed while gaining an appreciation for ecosystems and your food!”

They are holding a contest to win one of five gift baskets; all you have to do to enter is take a photo of your family or friends enjoying a body of water this weekend. You don’t have to be fishing, you can be enjoying any water sport, but it does have to be somewhere within the Battle River Watershed.

Then just post it on social media, and tag BRWA by adding the hashtag #BattleRiverWatershed in your comments. If you’re not on social media, you can just email a photo to: otis@battleriverwatershed.ca

The free fishing weekend does not extend to bodies of water located within national parks, like Banff, Jasper, Waterton, or Wood Buffalo, but does extend to all provincial parks, and other bodies of water.

Flagstaff County has three stocked fishing areas, the Daysland Fish Pond, the Lougheed Trout Pond, and the Forestburg Diplomat Mine Pond (located 8km South of Hwy 53 on Hwy 855 near Forestburg).

If fishing is something you’ve always wanted to try, this weekend is the perfect time to give it a go and win a great prize as well.
