Hwy 13 and 55 Street, Lougheed

Stop in at Smith’s Equipment Sales in Lougheed and it will quickly become evident that owners Dan and Gillian Smith take great pride in their family owned and operated business.

“Farming is still a very family-oriented industry,” explains Gillian.

“When customers come into Smith’s Equipment Sales, it is really two families working together to get the most out of the farm. Relationships that we have, have been built up over generations, and they’re really important to us.

“We have the same regional focus and pride as our customers do. And at the end of the day, we don’t have shareholders to answer to; our number one responsibility is to our customers.”

Selling farm equipment is a Smith family tradition that dates back to 1943.

Ralph Smith started it all off with a single-pump gas station on the highway in Lougheed. Before long, he was selling farm equipment.

The family business continued to grow over the years. In the early ’90s, Bob Smith took over, continuing to sell and service farm equipment.

“Dan also worked there pretty much his entire life,” Gillian notes, “but decided to walk away in 2006 and start his own business – Smith’s Hauling. He did that for a few years until about 2009 when we were approached by a farm equipment manufacturer who wanted us to sell their equipment. And to everybody’s surprise, Dan said, ‘yes,’ and here we are.”

Their original building was located in town, but they quickly outgrew that spot and moved to their present location in 2012.

These days, Smith’s Equipment Sales is a full-service dealership that carries CLAAS, Versatile, Vermeer, Schulte, Bad Boy Mowers, Elmers, Macdon, McCormick, RBR, Gates, Kioti, Mahindra and Westward Parts.

“Farming is a very technologically driven industry.

“Improvements to equipment make business of farming more profitable. So in response to this, we are unique to other dealerships that we source the best equipment from all over the world to provide to our customers,” Gillian says.

“We have focused a lot on building up our service and parts department and are really proud of the level of excellence that we can provide.

“Our service techs have so much practical experience to offer our customers on all makes of equipment, and they are continually in training to learn even more.

“Our parts department is the most comprehensive and reliably stocked in the region. Again, not just for the manufacturers that we carry, but for all types of equipment.”
