Killam Fire Department holds annual recognition

Killam firefighter Ken Fleck received a surprise on Thursday, Jan. 11 when Fire Chief Joe Knievel and Killam Mayor Ben Kellert dropped into his workplace and presented him with his 40-year service pin as a firefighter.

Just over a week since the Killam Fire Department assisted with the hotel fire in Daysland, they sat down to enjoy their annual Fire Department Social at the Killam Legion, on Friday, Jan. 11.

During a short presentation, Killam Mayor Ben Kellert addressed Killam’s volunteer fire department members.

“When a man becomes a fireman, his greatest act of bravery has already been accomplished,” Kellert began. “What he does after that is all in the line of work,’ so said Edward Croker.

“Thank you to each and every one of you for your ongoing commitment to your community. Your generosity and selflessness is appreciated by every one. You have sought to make a difference, without financial gain, but for the love and care of your fellow citizens.

Killam Fire Chief Joe Knievel spoke next, starting with, “Thanks each of you for your diligence and commitment, for attending training sessions and many calls.”

Knievel talked about the types of calls the department has answered this year, and said to the firefighters, “I especially note the challenge with false monitored alarms. These are a nuisance, but we all need to be ready to respond to these calls.”

Knievel gave a brief overview of the Emergency Services review and new business plan, saying that the decisions are now at the fate of municipal governments in the region.

Knievel went on to say, “Thank you to partners and spouses. When firefighters are called to respond, especially during meals and family events, our parts are left to you, and we recognize the important role you play, and want to acknowledge you.”

Knievel then read aloud from a letter received from the Town of Daysland, addressed to the Killam Fire Department.
