“The town was quite amenable to helping set up an office,” recalls Rudosky, who was born in Virden, Man., but grew up in Camrose. “I said I’ll come out and try it for five years – and it’s been 36.”
Over the years, the Daysland resident has honed his craft and expanded his services – a necessity in a rural area.
Rudosky, a general practitioner, takes pride in offering a wide range of treatment options to his patients, including sinus lifts, dental implants, and basic orthodontic procedures.
“Out in the country, over time you just take courses and learn how to do what has to be done out here. A lot of people, especially seniors, can’t make it to the specialists,” he explains. “We try to do what we can for patients locally without having to send them away.
“There are still cases we refer out to the specialists. But sometimes, if we don’t do it here, nothing’s getting done. So we started doing it.
“There are very few things that you can’t get done in a general dentist’s office under local anesthetic.”
A few years after opening the Daysland Dental Clinic, Rudosky opted to open a clinic in Forestburg to help make himself more accessible to patients throughout the region.
For the most part, however, patients in rural areas are prepared to travel to see their dentist. The Daysland Dental Clinic draws from Flagstaff County, Camrose County, the County of Paintearth, and Viking. while the Forestburg Dental Clinic draws from Stettler, Coronation and Castor, Rudosky says.
In June 2016, Rudosky welcomed Dr. Leanne Ball, a freshly minted dental school graduate, as an associate at both clinics.
The addition has been mutually beneficial. Rudosky acknowledges that it’s nice to have another dentist around.
Ball adds: “He’s been awesome to work with and good to learn from. He does everything.”
Ball, who grew up on a cattle and hay farm near Holden, lives just south of Sedgewick with her husband, a fourth-generation farmer, and their new baby.
A general practitioner who’s certified to provide Invisalign, Ball says she enjoys practicing in a rural setting.
“The people that you work on are really more than patients,” she says. “Most of them, you find out about their lives, their businesses, their kids.
“It’s neat being in that kind of community where everyone’s a little bit tighter-knit than if you were in the city.”
The new mom is currently working three days a week: Mondays and Wednesdays in Daysland, and Tuesdays in Forestburg.
Rudosky, meanwhile, is in Forestburg on Wednesdays, and Daysland the rest of the week.
New patients are being accepted at both clinics.
In addition to the two dentists, the clinics employ nine part-time staffers, including two hygienists and two office workers.
