Augustana hosts successful Reading University for Flagstaff students

Seventy-five Grade 2 and 3 students in the Battle River School Division (BRSD), including a class from Flagstaff, just graduated from a very unique program, called Reading University.

This program runs for four weeks in the summer, and its purpose is to support young learners and help them increase their literary skills.

Only available to students recommended by their teachers, the program was developed to help students get a solid foundation in literacy.

“There is lots of evidence to support the concept that in their first three years of school, students learn to read and after that they use their reading skills to learn everything else, so we want to ensure that students get every opportunity to build those literacy skills early on,” says BRSD Communications Coordinator Diane Hutchinson.

Students spend the first four weeks of summer in classrooms and libraries, but also get to go on amazing field trips, like to the zoo, airport, museums, and even a police station.
