In her own words, Tamina Miller was “tired of being tired.”

Depression and anxiety were keeping her awake at night, and the lack of quality sleep was taking a debilitating toll.

But that was before she discovered meditation.

“I’ve suffered a lot of anxiety, a lot of depression and the funny thing is I have a really amazing family,” Miller says. “I have a wonderful husband, two great kids, but I found that I still wasn’t happy and so I had a lot of things to figure out – a few stressful things, traumatic things that happened in my childhood that I kinda left behind, that I had to work through – and in all the work that I was doing for that, meditation came into the picture.”

Miller started out as a self-described “closet meditator” because she thought the concept was a little crazy and she didn’t think she could explain to anybody what she was doing.

“I learned on my own. I thought if it doesn’t work out, nobody knows I’m even trying it,” she recalls. “As it turns out, meditating five to 10 minutes a day brought my anxiety down. My depression started lessening. I started seeing joy in my life. I started appreciating my life, falling in love with my family and my world.”

Meditation essentially brought Miller peace of mind and helped quiet the anxious thoughts that kept her up at night. She was soon sleeping for a full eight hours a night, instead of three.

And so, she stuck to her daily meditation practice.

Then one morning, about four years later, Miller decided she wanted to teach meditation so she could share its many benefits with others.
After an online search, Miller signed up with Sarah McLean of the McLean Meditation Institute in Sedona, Arizona.

“With meditation, it isn’t woo-woo, it isn’t nonsensical stuff,” Miller explains. “Her website was down-to-earth. If I’m going to teach something, I don’t want people to be afraid of weird stuff because there’s nothing weird about meditation. It’s basically just exercise for your brain. It’s strengthening your brain. It’s helping you have better concentration and better focus.”

It took Miller eight months of home study to complete the McLean Meditation Institute’s 200-hour training program.

She then went to Sedona for her certification, completing an intensive eight 12-hour days under McLean.

“She was so darn thorough and she made me so comfortable,” Miller says. “I knew that’s what I wanted to do, especially after I had met her.”

That was in 2015. The newly minted Certified Meditation Teacher began teaching classes everywhere from Daysland to Hardisty and Coronation to Castor and Forestburg.

“I was travelling up to 1,000 kilometres a week, which was a little bit much,” she notes.

So in 2016, she had her picturesque cabin built in Alliance to accommodate weekly classes.

Classes are currently held Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Be sure to mention this feature during the month of May to receive a special deal that doesn’t expire: eight classes for $120.

Also, on June 8 to 10, Miller is hosting a Meditation and Wellness Weekend Retreat featuring her mentor at the Battle River Crossing Resort near Alliance. “My wish is for people to realize that you have all the answers that you need within you,” Miller says. “You just need to quiet things down so you can hear them.”
