Daysland-born supercentenarian passes before 111th birthday

The Goldberg family, from left: Morris, Bernie, Florence, Bill, and Alan, moved out of the area with their father and mother, Max and Mollie Goldberg, in 1925. All but Bill were born in Daysland, and all five children attended school in the town.

The Goldberg family, Max and Mollie, settled in Daysland around 1905 with their infant son William David, according to their grandson Ron Goldberg.

Max was a tailor and Mollie was a midwife, he says.

In Daysland, they had four more children, Florence, Morris, Alan, and Bernie, all raised and schooled in Daysland until the family moved to Edmonton in 1925.

Florence, the only girl of the family, married Harry Middleman of Calgary, where they settled.

Bill, Morris, and Bernie remained in Edmonton, and Alan settled in Vancouver.

Goldberg wrote to The ‘Press to advise that Florence Goldberg Middleman passed away, on Feb. 3 in Calgary, at the age of 110 years.

“This makes her probably the oldest resident in Alberta, possibly the oldest Jewish female in Canada, and without doubt the oldest Jewish female citizen of Daysland, past or present.

“The only other Jewish family I was aware of in Daysland was the Lipkind family, with whom Florence remained in contact over the years.”

Goldberg says it may well be that no current resident of Daysland has any memory of his aunt Florence or any of the other Daysland Goldbergs, but he wanted to share the information as a human interest story.

If anyone does remember the Daysland Goldbergs, he’d be happy to hear from them, he says. (Contact The Community Press)

Florence was born on Aug. 13, 1906, and died in Calgary on Feb. 3, 2017, making her 110 years and 174 days old, putting her among the oldest people in the entire country before her death.
