Wheat Kings’ Clay Lang leads scoring race with 40 goals
The Killam Wheat Kings ended 2015 with 3-2 road win in Cold Lake and started the new year off with a road game in Vermilion where they came away with a 6-3 win. Forward Clay Lang, meanwhile, has reached the 40-goal plateau and leads the league in scoring.
The win put the Wheaties on a six game winning streak and first place in the league with two points over the Bisons who have a game in hand.
Killam Head coach Bob Charchun said, ”We have been banged up a bit, nursing a few injuries, and some depth players are really stepping up.
Brant Johnson has scored in his last 2 games. We went to Cold Lake on Dec. 20 with 12 skaters and managed to squeak out a big win. Regular forward, Drew Bish, played outstanding moving back to D just to make four. I don’t think he lost a puck battle all game and played very disciplined.
“The Vermilion game was much better than I expected considering the long break. The boys battled hard and showed well in all three zones. Watty (Tanner Watkins) played very solid and is still undefeated in league play. The guys always seem to play strong in front of Tanner. Collectively, our D played very well. Clay Lang, who has captained our team since Lynes has been injured, has not missed a step and scored a big shortie.”
Clay Lang scored a pair of goals in Vermilion for a total of 40 goals so far this season and first place in the scoring race. “We will get a good week of practice in to prepare for Wainwright Friday night. It has been a while since we have played them so the guys are looking forward to it. It should be a good one with first place up for grabs.”
The two rivals will match up in Killam on Friday with puck drop at 8:30 p.m., with first place and pride on the line. The teams have played two games this year both in Wainwright, with the teams each taking a win.
