Newest Corporal happy to be back working in rural Alberta
Killam RCMP Detachment members have welcomed a new corporal this month, as Corporal James Malone arrived.
Malone replaces Cpl. Brent Robinson, who has moved to Rocky Mountain House.
Malone comes to Killam from a detachment in Nunavut that was 500 km north of the Arctic Circle.
There he was commander in charge of the detachment of three members.
“I liked the work; the communities there really support the RCMP,” Malone says, “It was a unique experience.”
Malone says he has worked in BC, Alberta, and Ontario prior to moving to Nunavut.
“I chose to return to Alberta because I have family here,” he said. “I had my choice of 10 or so detachments, but when I learned Killam might be available, I requested this posting specifically.”
Malone says he prefers working in rural areas, and when he worked as a welder, he travelled throughout the province, including the Flagstaff area.
Malone tried at 18 years of age to enter the RCMP, but when he didn’t hear back, started pursuing other career opportunities, like welding.
When he was in his early 30s, he applied again, and was accepted, and has been a member for 13 years.
He’s looking forward to the challenge of working in a larger detachment, he says.
“The corporal’s main job is to supervise constables, and be their support system,” Malone says.
