Third-annual Mister G Memorial Scholarship recipient announced

The Spartan Volleyball Club Alumni are pleased to announce that the third annual Mister G Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Lexi Antos, formerly of Killam, now residing in Vermilion.

Antos received the award in November 2014. She has had a busy winter season with the Irma Chargers Jr. A Ladies Hockey club in the AJFHL,the only ladies league at that high of a caliber in our province, as well as taking her first year of Animal Sciences Technology at Lakeland College in Vermilion.

Antos had a colourful history with the Spartan Volleyball Club in her youth, having been involved as a player as well as being an ambassador, preparing and delivering a presentation at the Spartan Reunion.

She has also continued to help develop youth in the sport of hockey as she assists with the Black Elks Summer Hockey Camps in Stettler and Killam.

The scholarship was developed by past members of the Spartan Volleyball Club after the passing of their mentor and coach Bob ‘Mister G’ Gabruck.

The Scholarship is $1,000, and is funded by donations from past club members who want to see the spirit of the Spartans, instilled by Mister G, continue well into the future.

The scholarship committee was honoured this year to have received a generous donation in memory of past Spartan, Lauren Brodie, who passed away suddenly in December of 2014.

The alumni are optimistic that in years to come more members will come forward to contribute to the fund, keeping it alive for generations to come.

The Mister G Memorial Scholarship is awarded to any past member of the Spartan Volleyball club who is pursuing a post-secondary education while continuing in any competitive sport. Applicants can range from those who are currently playing to volunteer coaches, as well as continuing in sport as officials.

The applicants should exemplify the meaning of “paying it forward,” as it was learned from Mister G, and they will have set excellent examples to follow in their athletic endeavors.

Applications for the 2015 award can be found on the Spartan Volleyball Alumni Facebook group page, or by contacting Christine Prichard directly.

Application deadline for the 2015 award is Oct. 1, 2015.

Mister G gave selflessly of his time, energy, spirit, and love to his extended volleyball family for 25 years, and the alumni felt this was a small, yet fitting way to repay his commitment to them.

Congratulations to the award winner, Lexi Antos.
