Daysland Northstars Playing for Cancer
On Saturday, Dec. 6, the Daysland Northstars will play a very special game against the Lloydminster Border Kings, on a night they are calling Play for Cancer.
Colin Zimmer, of the Northstars, says his mom was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, adding, “I felt I needed to be able to do something about it.
“Cancer has affected a lot of guys on our team in many different ways.”
At the start of August, he pitched the idea to the rest of the team.
“We were starting to gear up for the upcoming season and started looking for sponsors.”
Zimmer says the rest of his teammates were very eager and excited to be a part of this idea, and to help out in getting it going.
“We have had fairly good support with the people who know about the game so far, but it’s hard to get the word out.”
He says the initial two sponsors were actually fairly easy to get.
“As soon as Les Fee, at Fee and Sons Funeral Home, and Wes Campbell, of Campbell-McLennan, heard about it, they both got behind it, and they both pitched in to help us get pink jerseys.”
He says the team is still looking for more sponsors, and would welcome any amount or kind of sponsorship.
The team will play the game in their new, bright pink jerseys, and then auction them off during the night, until midnight.
“Each jersey will be up for auction, and all proceeds will be given to cancer research.
“If anyone wants to donate any silent auction items, we would be more than happy with anything.”
Lloydminster is aware that this is a special game, and team representatives said they will be using pink tape that evening to show their support as well.
Zimmer says that the team will be wearing pink ribbons on their helmets all season to show their support for breast cancer research.
“My biggest hope for the night is just that we get a good turnout for the game, and also raise a pretty good amount to put towards research.”
So get on out there, all you BRHL fans, and show your support.
