Forestburg firefighters Walk a Mile in Her Shoes
Four daring Forestburg firefighters donned red high heels to take part in the Walk A Mile in Her Shoes fundraising campaign held in Camrose on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Forestburg Fire Chief Kevin Lunty; Deputy Fire Chief Dwayne Giroux; and firefighters Nathan Lunty and Bernie Fehey participated in the campaign to raise money and awareness on the issues of domestic violence for the Camrose Women’s Shelter Society.
The event was held during the intermission of the Camrose Kodiak’s hockey game against the Brooks Bandits.
Camrose Women’s Shelter Executive Director, Loretta Johnson said, “The night serves two purposes to those in attendance, it both entertains and enlightens the audience.
“This way people can come to a hockey game, watch the walkers and support them in whatever way they want.”
Giroux says, “The reason we became involved in the event is that my daughter Jordon works for the Camrose Women’s Shelter and she asked me if the fire department would like to take part.
“I took it to a meeting and it was well received. “In this day and age of abuse towards women and children, supporting the shelter, which includes Forestburg and surrounding area, provided us the opportunity to help with this worthwhile cause.”
Giroux says there was a total of 63 walkers, and the unofficial total raised in pledges on Saturday night was close to $35,000.
That total will rise as it does not include the silent auction and pledges that were still coming in.
“The total raised by the four of us was $4,335,” says Giroux.
