In January of this year, on the recommendation of School Superintendent Dr. Larry Payne, the Battle River School Division (BRSD) trustees voted to consider possible closure of both the Rosalind and Lougheed Schools, with each motion passing in a 5-3 vote, recording opposing votes coming from Chair Doug Bowie, Vice-Chair Peter Miller, and each of Kendall Severson and Noreen Metz voting to keep the schools in their wards open, but voting against each other’s schools.

After that meeting, parents and community members were informed that the board would welcome their input before the Apr. 24 meeting of the board, at which time the motions would be voted on, while administration also had the opportunity to reiterate the decision to bring the recommendation for closure before the board.

That opportunity was taken during the Jan. 24 meeting by administration, as well as at the Feb. 14 meeting at the request of the board as they prepared for community meetings in Rosalind and Lougheed, which were held Feb. 27 and 28 respectively.

In February, the board heard from administration that work continued on the Mennonite Alternative Program Update, of interest specifically to the Lougheed School, who presented a report to the board showing an expected increase in enrollment numbers for Mennonite students in the upcoming school years.
