Sacrifices remembered across Flagstaff

Most of the 10 municipalities within Flagstaff County, as well as the surrounding area, held Remembrance Day services, from Wednesday all the way to Sunday, as school breaks were accommodated.

Many local municipalities were visited by troops on exercises from CFB Wainwright, who were thrilled to include these servicemen in their services, both as special guests and as honourees, and take fellowship with them afterwards, be it in private lunches or those open to the public.

The visiting troops joined the Sedgewick Legion members and Colour Party in the parade to the Cenotaph for the laying of the wreaths after Sunday, Nov. 11’s service in the community hall.

Alliance always has a very special Remembrance Day community service with many special displays. This year one of the displays was to celebrate the anniversary of the Wrens, a very special display to resident Randy Wickstrom, who served with the Wrens.

Forestburg School held a community service early, on Nov 6, with a good number of the community in attendance as well.

Galahad residents took a brief moment to honour those former residents who served and paid the ultimate price for their sacrifice, with the help of Rev. Steve Haughland, at the local cenotaph on Sunday.

Members of the Lougheed Legion cut the outdoor portion of their ceremony short as temperatures hovered in the minus 20 Celsius range on Sunday; after a service in the Community Hall, they moved to the Legion to enjoy fellowship.

Other municipalities also had special celebrations, which tend to occur at exactly the same time, especially with Remembrance Day services, regrettably, we are unable to attend them all, but we do try to rotate our coverage, and always feel extremely privileged to be specifically invited.
