Flagstaff County awards $44,000 in new scholarships

In the spring of 2012, Flagstaff County councillors voted to approve the startup of a new scholarship and pursuit of excellence program, to encourage post-secondary training with assistance with the costs associated with attending post-secondary institutions.

Council approved $37,000 spending in the scholarship program, with another $18,000 in a Pursuit of Excellence program.

The initial program was to offer 26 scholarships for programs of study including Medical doctor, Medical-any, Pharmacy, Apprentice-ship programs, Agricultural related studies, Business Administration, and Engineering.

Council also approved funding for a Pursuit of Excellence program, designed to encourage athletes or teams wanting to strive to attain a higher level in their field and provide funding to achieve those objectives.

The County received total applications of $41,000 with $3,000 for the Athletic scholarship program and appointed a committee early in the summer to review the applications.
