Wheat Kings tie with Vermilion, slide to 0-1-1 over the weekend
The Killam Wheat Kings hosted the Vermilion Tigers on Friday, Nov. 11. This game was entertaining for the nearly-full stands.
The Wheat Kings’ Cole Flad opened the scoring early in the first. Less then a minute later, James Newby added another to the score with a short-handed goal.
With 12 seconds left in the first, Flad added another to make the score 3-0 for the home team.
The game was very physical with both teams throwing the body checks. Early into the second, Wheatie Cory Martz and Tiger Craig Wilkinson squared off in what was a heavy weight boxing match. This got all fans on their feet with the decision going to Martz. Both players were ejected from the game.
The Tigers scored two on the power play and one at even strength to make it a tie game.
With under five left in the second, Wheat King Justin Ness and Tiger Derek Krys squared off in what was the middle weight class division.
Ness won that decision easily. Both players were also ejected from the game with Ness getting the extra two.
There was no scoring in the third. Both teams had chances with the Wheat Kings having the edge on shots on the net 41-34.
The teams remained scoreless after five minutes of four on four overtime. Then five minutes of three on three.
The Tigers’ goalie was outstanding in the overtime sessions robbing the Wheat Kings on many occasions.
This game was one for the fans, very fast-paced, lots of good checks, some great shots and saves, with a couple of boxing match ups.
The Wheat kings travelled to Thorhild on Saturday, Nov. 15 where they lost by a score of 3-2 to the Titans.
The next home game for the Wheat Kings is Saturday, Nov. 19 at an 8 p.m. start where they will host the first place Cold Lake Ice.
