Killam native promotes ‘Racing for a Cure’

Killam native Brent Slavik recently volunteered at the Racing for a Cure event which took place on June 24 at the Legislative grounds in Edmonton.

Racing for a Cure is an annual event which raises funds for the Kids with Cancer Society and over the five years has raised $1,745,000 as people can donate money to ride in a fancy sports car.

Slavik was volunteering at the event on behalf of Sun Life Financial as his office recently became a new sponsor for the event.

In regards to his role at the event, Slavik said, “The Kids with Cancer Society offers financial support to the children, families, and survivors who are impacted by childhood cancer.

“My job was to talk with people about juvenile cancer and the unexpected financial burden that it places on families, such as the added cost of cancer treatments and hospital stays, and what the society does to help and also to explain that there is a type of coverage available through Sun Life Financial that can help ease the financial burden for families if they ever have to go through this traumatic experience.

“I also walked around talking with people, explaining what the event was about, where to go to give your donation and how to sign up for a ride in an exotic sports car.”
