Hardisty celebrates Canada’s 150 with dinner and a movie, and more

Saturday dawned in Hardisty with breakfast at the Elks Hall, then garage sale-ing.

The gusting winds were more than happy to oblige, or impede, those looking to enjoy a day of treasure hunting, but unfortunately grounded the air show planned for the afternoon.

The awesome hobbyists from LA Modellers in Lougheed, who came out with their planes, set up in the Hardisty Community Hall instead, and showed off the models to interested individuals.

The barbecue was a smashing success, with town councillors working hard at the grill to keep up with demand.

The crowd, estimated at over 300, popped by the Community Hall to check out the planes, enjoy a barbecue prepared by hardworking Council members and administration, then stay for the movie and dance.

The movie was well enjoyed by the crowd, with laughter ringing out through the hall. The face painting was also very busy, with lineups almost all night long.

Community spirit shone the brightest after the movie was over, as people started cleaning up the hall for the dance. They put away chairs and tables, swept up spilled popcorn and leftover trash from the meal.

Everyone was laughing and having a great time during cleaning – especially CAO Sandy Otto, who chased the kids around while dust mopping up the popcorn.

DJ Wally kept the party going with dancing tunes, which really thrilled the kids who kept the dance floor busy while parents chatted around the hall.

Organizers said, “We were just so thrilled that so many people came, despite the wind, the cancelled air show and the cool and damp weather.”

“The United Church was very gracious in letting us host our party the same day as their Pancake Breakfast and Community-wide Garage Sale, giving us extra events to attract people to the community, while not accidentally overlapping,” says Hardisty’s newest member of the administration, Stacey Lavallie, Marketing and administrative assistant.
