CHSPS Educational Results report shows room for improvement

Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) Principal Steve Hoyland recently shared the Three-Year Education Plan and Annual Educational Results Report, which is created using performance results to develop strategies for the school going forward.

Hoyland says the plan is a living document that will assist the school in achieving the goals for continuous improvement and success.

“We have a lot of good things happening in the building,” Hoyland says, “however there have been some trends in Provincial Achievement Tests (PAT) and Diploma marks where we have not been seeing the numbers we want to see. We are not where we could be.”

Diploma Examination results range from high to very high achievements in English Language Arts, Social Studies, Biology, and Science 30, to low to very low in Mathematics 30-1, and Chemistry 30, and Physics 30, to intermediate in Mathematics 30-2.

Hoyland points out that test results in Humanities studies are consistently excellent, but that math and science results need work.

The measure details use average class results, and with smaller classes than some schools in the province, just one or two students can bring down the total.

Hoyland says, “If there’s even one child who didn’t achieve, we need to work on that.”

“As a teacher, it’s tough not to personalize results.”

Hoyland said the entire staff has pulled together, and are working together and sharing strategies for improvement.

CHSPS results for Grade 9 PAT were varied, with low scores on English Language Arts, Mathematics 9, and Social Studies of particular concern, with marks well below provincial averages.

Language Arts 9, Mathematics 9, and Social Studies 9 results were all rated very low, with Mathematics 9 KAE and Science 9 rated intermediate.
