Newest RCMP member a small town boy ‘through and through’

Cst-Trevor-Norton-2016Constable Travis Norton is the newest member of the Killam Detachment of the RCMP, and started work on Friday, Aug. 12.

Norton is an Alberta native, he comes from Rosemary, a small village located in the Brooks area.

Growing up, Norton says that the father of one his friends was an RCMP member, and so he participated in a number of ride-alongs.

“He actually encouraged me in this career,” he says, “I started this process very young, at age 19, and he showed confidence in my ability to succeed.”

It’s not like he always knew he wanted to be an officer, Norton says, but his friend’s father opened his eyes to the possibility, and he realized he had some of the skills that would be valuable to an RCMP member.

“I’m good at listening to both sides of an issue without judging, and I’m good at talking to people; I like talking to people.”

He decided he wanted to give it a shot, “It seemed like a good fit for me.”

He said the lifestyle of an officer, they need to keep fit, also appeals to him very much.

“I love all sports; every sport on land and water.”

Primarly, growing up, Norton played organized hockey from a little tyke all the way to Midget, and says he still enjoys it.
Norton says that he and the detachment’s other new member, Cst. Harris, went through Depot at the same time.

Norton and his wife came to the area for the first time to look around in June, during Killam’s Rodeo weekend. “It was a great time to be here, we even took in some of the sights.”

They found a house in Killam, and will be moving in soon. They have two horses they will be boarding in the area as soon as they can get them moved up here, “My wife is very much into equestrian interests.”
