Quilting bee offers warmth to Fort McMurray evacuees

On Friday, May 13, a quilting bee was held in Crafty Creations in Killam.

The event saw around 10 quilters come and go as they were able to make time to donate their services, and the finished quilts will be donated to evacuees from the Fort McMurray fire.

“We’ve got a lot of donated fabric,” said Sharleen Chevraux.

A quilting frame was borrowed from a local church, and the quilting bee was open to anyone interested in helping out.

Chevraux noted that one woman stated she wanted to help, but had no quilting skills. She donated some money, which was used to purchase the batting for the quilts constructed on Friday.

Gwen Simpson, who was a part of a quilting group in Sherwood Park, brought completed blocks, and even about 12 completed tops of quilts.

“Gwen is an amazing resource,” said Chevraux.

The quilting bee featured Quilting Guild members, as well as others who were less experienced, but just as enthusiastic and giving.
