Originally planned as a fundraiser, with special guest Wildrose Leader Brian Jean scheduled to attend, Saturday’s barbecue lunch in Killam hosted by Battle River-Wainwright MLA Wes Taylor went through some unexpected changes.

It became a Fort McMurray fundraiser, after residents of that city were evacuated on Tuesday, May 3 due to a forest fire raging out of control.

Jean, MLA for Fort McMurray-Conklin reportedly lost his home of 10 years in the fire, and is understandably busy with family and constituents.

Scott Cyr, MLA for Bonnyville-Cold Lake, stepped up to co-host the event with Taylor, who turned the afternoon into an opportunity to raise funds for Fort McMurray evacuees.

Donations were being accepted for the Red Cross, and for Samaritan’s Purse on Saturday.

As well, silent auction items, many donated by Taylor, were sold with 100 per cent of the funds going into relief donations.

Taylor talked a little about the need to work together to rebuild after this disaster, while Cyr asked for a moment of silence to reflect on what northern residents have gone through.

Cyr commended Taylor for his work as a volunteer firefighter, and commended all first responders for the outstanding work they do, and continue to do trying to bring the Wood Buffalo fire under control.
