Sedgewick Meals on Wheels now up and running

When Sedgewick residents met in October and November to discuss the closure of Flagstaff Lodge, and the new self-contained seniors housing, one of the concerns identified was the need for residents of the self-contained unit to do their own cooking.

Flagstaff Regional Housing Group (FRHG) Chair Donna Beulow mentioned during the October meeting that she felt meals could become available to residents of the units via some entrepreneurial venture.

Two area women heard that message loud and clear, but instead of looking to make money, they instead looked to how they could provide a service to the community, to both existing residents and those who end up living in those self-contained units in future.

Judy Ferrier and Jeannette Patten decided to look into a Meals on Wheels model to make healthy, balanced, and nutritious meals available to any Sedgewick resident.

“We thought there was a need for this, and would be more so in the future, as more and more people are staying longer in their homes.

“This is a way to provide respite for those who are tired of cooking for themselves, and we offer healthy meal choices for many who may not be getting the nutrition they need.

“Good nutrition will play a key role in how long they are able to stay in their homes,” adds Ferrier.
