Meet the Federal Candidates: Kevin Sorenson, Conservative MP

kevin-sorensonConservative Party of Canada candidate, and incumbent of the old Crowfoot electoral district, Kevin Sorenson is a businessman and farmer from Killam.

Constituency boundaries have changed since he was first elected in Crowfoot in 2000, more than once.

Sorenson was elected in 2000 as the Canadian Alliance Candidate, then in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2011, has been the Conservative MP for Crowfoot for nearly 15 years.

In 2004 and 2006, Sorenson had the largest margin of victory in any federal riding, at 80.2 per cent and 82.5 per cent respectively.

Most recently, Sorenson served as Canada’s Minister of State (Finance) since being named to cabinet in July, 2013.

Born and raised in Killam, Kevin and his wife, Darlene, and their two children still reside on a farm within a few miles of the Sorenson family farm, where his mother and father currently reside, and where his grandfather began farming over a century ago.

Prior to first being elected, Kevin farmed and owned and operated a small auction company.

Sorenson has garnered the respect of his peers, fellow MPs, from both sides of the house during his 14 years.

He gained the respect of a number of opposition MPs after refusing to mail out handbills supporting Trudeau attack ads, according to iPolitics this week.

Sorenson also helped coordinate Hay West distributions to Alberta farmers in 2002, along with MP Larry Miller.

The Canadian federal election will be held on October 19, 2015.
