Sedgewick men’s golf team brings home Interclub trophy

The Sedgewick Men’s team brought the Interclub trophy home for 2015, with a decisive win against Forestburg, Viking, and Hardisty teams.

Golfers competed over four separate evenings with teams of four players from each club.

Forestburg holds the record, with 23 wins, and the only repeat-win in 2014, but Sedgewick is inching closer, with a total of 19 wins now.

Organizer Chuck Livingston, of Sedgewick, says they almost had five clubs this year as Hughenden Club indicated some interest early on, but was unable to get enough players out.

Forestburg and Viking were just a point apart for second and third place, with Forestburg coming out ahead with 554.5 points to Vikings 553.5, and Hardisty had a total of 519.50 points for fourth place.

Each team plays one round on each of the participating courses, earning points for various things every night, including points for sending new players to each course.

“You can’t send the same four guys and expect to win,” says Livingston, “even if they are your best players, the more guys you get out, the better.”

He says it’s not a huge time committment, and for those competing, it’s a free round of golf and supper.

He says he would really like to see all the area clubs participate, past competing clubs have included Daysland, Coronation, Castor, Irma, and Hughenden.

Livingston says they try to match handicaps for players, and he thinks the point system works very well, last year the top three teams were only three-and-a-half points apart.

The interclub competition started in 1966, and has run every year except 2012, when Sedgewick had no greens.

Livingston says he’s more than willing to continue to organize the event, he’s done so for about 15 years.
