Roughstock Rodeo brings battle between talented cowboys and great stock to Sedgewick

Sedgewick’s Rough Stock Rodeo, held this past weekend, was a two-day event guaranteed to have something for everyone.

Saturday started with a trade fair in the arena, held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and full to the brim with vendors.

Outside, visitors admired the many and varied entries in the car, truck, bike, and tractor show and shine, with some outstanding entries.

Kids got busy digging in the money pit, bouncing in the elephant bouncy house, getting their faces painted, and visiting the petting zoo.

A new and very popular event this year was advertised as ‘blow up a car,’ and was at the very least a demonstration of how important it is to check your vehicle’s oil and coolant levels.

What it was is fun, as the truck, donated by Roger Sinke, was drained of all fluids, then started up to see how long it would run.

A 50/50 pool allowed participants to guess how long they thought it might go before it blew.

Once the truck got started, it wasn’t long before it started smoking, and just shy of the four-minute mark, the old beast called it quits.

Since no one had precisely called the right time, a draw was held from all tickets sold.

The real stars of Saturday’s event were the horses in the Heavy Horse Pull, as teams from all around came to compete.

The event started at 2,500 pounds on the sled, and increased by 500 pounds every round, with the big horses making it look like they were pulling feathers.

Sunday morning started with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on the grounds, with the rodeo action starting at 3 p.m.

The Rough Stock Rodeo is a CCA sanctioned event, with cowboys competing here hoping they can go up in the ranks before the finals start.

Bareback saw only three entries, with Brady Bertram of Piapot, Sask. taking the long and short rounds, winning a jacket from D & S Oilfield for his long round score of 76, then taking home $500 in the short round riding Easy Money, who did not make it easy for Bertram.

In the Saddlebronc event, 14 riders put on a great show, with a three-way tie for second at the end of the long event. The short event saw Casey Bertram, winner of the long event, and a jacket from Hazelwood Projects, tie with second-place Josh Harden, both getting a score of 80 in the finals, and splitting the prize money.

The bulls were the stars of the bull riding event, as 12 cowboys took to the field with only four posting scores and going into the short round.
Ronny Delarue won the jacket from Blaser Printing in the long round with a score of 82 on his ride, but in the short round finals the bulls won the day again, with not one rider of the top four making the full eight seconds.

In the words of the announcer, while the crowd saw two days of events, what they didn’t see was all the days of work before and after those two days by the volunteers for the Sedgewick Ag. Society, setting up and tearing down, and getting the sponsors together for this event with world class top cowboys and stock going head to head.
