Sabres topple Irma, Tofield over the weekend

Last Friday, Battle River Hockey League action saw the Sedgewick Sabres hosting the Irma Aces in what turned out to be a penalty-filled game with 282 penalty minutes handed out along with eight game misconducts. Sabres won 6-0.

Honourary Sabre for the night was seven-year-old Gibson Seffern from the novice Sedgewick Sharks who did the warm up and stood on the blue line with the starting line up for the national anthem.

Sedgewick opened the scoring with a goal from Ryley Johnson after five minutes of play. Then Scott Effert added one more at the halfway mark of the first to give the home team the 2-0 lead after one.

In the second period, Sabre Ben Starbuck scored at the halfway mark.

With four minutes remaining, what started with a missed call of spearing then a called cross-check, tempers flew and six players were involved in a brawl.

Out of that altercation, all six players were ejected with game misconducts for fighting.

With under two minutes remaining, Shaun Poohachoff scored on the power-play to make the score 4-0 after two.

Poohachoff added one more goal just over halfway of the third.

Late in the third, Irma player Brett Larson received a game misconduct and match penalty for a head butt on Sabre Kobsar.

Larson ended up getting two games for that highly controversial hit, which had Sabres fans yelling and even trying to climb over the glass to make sure the referee heard their grievances.

Brandon Heck added another on the power-play to make the final score 6-0 for the home team.

Sabre goalie Jordy Cox earned the shutout with 24 saves on the night.

The Sabres travelled to Tofield on Saturday night where they faced off against the Satellites.

Tofield was first on the scoreboard with goals from Chad Urshel and Brian Tavaroli.

The Sabres tied it up with a goal from Brandon Heck and a short-handed marker from Chris Dawn with five minutes remaining in the first period.

Tofield took the lead with a goal from Ryan Olson. Just under two minutes left in the first, Aaron Heck scored on the power-play to tie the score at three a piece.

After five minutes of play in the second, Effert scored to put the Sabres up by one for a brief moment. Less then a minute later, Effert scored his second of the night on the power-play for a score 5-4 for the visiting Sabres after two periods of play.

Sedgewick dominated the scoreboard in the third with goals by Starbuck, Kelvin Tuftin, and Brandon Heck making the final score 8-4 for the Sabres.

The Sabres will travel to Daysland on Wednesday to meet the Northstars.

The two will face off again in Sedgewick on Saturday night.
